Northen Lights Season

We have finally got into the Northern lights (or aurora) season and where better to see them then in the northernmost town of Iceland, Siglufjörður. The aurora season in Iceland is from late September through mid-April. These months have longer, darker nights, which create optimal viewing conditions for the aurora. However the beauty of the aurora is that they do not always want to be seen which makes it more special when you finally get to see it! We have a few tips for you how to not miss the aurora.

Tips how to see the Northen Lights

We have a few tips for you how to see them.

  1. Check the Northern Lights forcast, you can for example see it on this websites: https://www.vedur.is/vedur/spar/nordurljos/#teg=skyjahula

or https://auroraforecast.is. Also for them to be seen properly it has to be lightly cloudy or a clear sky.

  2. The most common time for them to show up is around 10 pm – 2 am so you might have to stay up late but on active nights they can come much sooner and stays for long.

  3. The beauty of searching for them in Siglufjörður is the lack of light pollution and you don‘t have to go far to be in complete darkness which is the ideal condition for aurora watching! We recommend going all the way to the end of Siglufjörður or to the next fjord, called Héðinsfjörður, where there are no lights, allowing the aurora to have all the attention they deserve.

  4. Wear warm clothes because it might get cold waiting.

  5. To make it extra hygge, make warm chocolate to make it even more memorable.

On a good day when the sea is smooth like a mirror and the aurora are dancing over the rocky mountains of Siglufjörður there is no better place to see the auroras... at least in our opinion.

Have a nice day and if you have any questions don‘t hesitate to send them to us!

Best regards,
